Tips & Tactics

  • Hiding behind walls or obstacles will give Spike an advantage in dealing damage from a safe position.
  • Always kite from afar and not let Brawlers like Mortis or El Primo get in range.

Spike Strategy 101

Spike is a legendary unlock who is well worth the title. His thrown cactuses explode at their max distance to release even more projectiles that disperse in a circle from the explosion. Because of this explosion, it’s not hard to land shots on your enemies. Even if you miss your main shot, you will usually hit with at least one of your spikes.

This makes spike an incredibly effective damage dealer, able to hit multiple opponents with every attack, and quickly charge his super. Using Spike’s main attack will become natural to you quickly, it is fast, so you don’t have to lead your opponent much to hit them, and the range is amazing. Where spikes main attack ends, a needle keeps going in that direction for several more tiles, this means that even if a target looks like it is out of range for you, usually it isn’t.

You effectively gain the initial attack distance, plus the spike, giving Spike one of the longest ranges in the game. Playing Spike will feel natural if you are experienced with Brock or Piper or Bo. He plays essentially like a sniper but with some interesting crowd control abilities. Stay behind cover, look for your opportunities to hit multiple targets, or to pick off brawlers and Spike should be a natural conversion from some of your other brawlers by the time you unlock him.

Spike’s super is very effective, and you will charge it pretty quickly as long as you are looking for stacked enemies to shoot at. Spike lays down a cactus field, slowing and damaging enemies that are caught in it. This super is great for both being aggressive, and when you need to quickly escape. Lay down his super on a group to deal huge damage and let you and your team unload on them, or lay it on an enemy trying to get away, trapping them and forcing them to confront you.

Finally, in desperation, laying it at your feet or slightly behind you will make a chasing opponent back off, or at least risk their own life chasing you through your prickly minefield. Just be wary not to get caught off guard, as you are a ranged DPS with low HP, you won’t fare well in most close up 1v1s, keep your distance and kite, and spike will be a great addition to your brawler arsenal.

  • 06.27.17 — Spike’s base Health was decreased from 700 to 600.
  • 09.04.17 — Spike’s super’s slowdown lasts less time once out of its range.
  • 10.05.17 — Spike’s Super projectile was made to fly faster.
  • 12.07.17 — the health and damage statistics of all Brawlers were multiplied by 4.
  • 12.18.17 — Spike’s Star Power healing was reduced to 500 (from 600) health per second.
